FANCOURT, JEAN A. (nee Klinck)
Born Jean Alice to Ethel and Raymond Klinck of Lancaster Avenue, Jean grew up in Buffalo, NY with her sister, Alice Hoffman and her brother, the late William C. Klinck. Jean died very peacefully on March 28, 2008 after a brief illness. She graduated from the Buffalo Seminary and Mt. Holyoke College where she made many friends whom she cherished for a lifetime. After college, Jean began her work as a chemist with Hewitt Rubber working on the development of synthetic rubber. In 1944, she joined Hooker Chemical where she participated in research for The Manhattan Project - work that earned a citation from the US Secretary of War. Jean later devoted her boundless enthusiasm to a second career with the Erie County Clerk's Office. But, when asked, Jean listed as her greatest accomplishment her "7 children." Jean was a devoted member of the Blessed Sacrament Parish where she was its first Woman Trustee. She was also a Eucharistic Minister bringing communion to shut-ins and hospital sick, a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, a volunteer with the"Grandmother" reading program at the Herman Badillo Elementary School, and a charter member of the "Brown Baggers" lunch club. An unflappable Buffalo supporter, Jean was an avid Sabres fan, a regular at the Kavinoky Theatre, and an integral member of her Lancaster-Auburn-Highland Avenue neighborhoods. She brought her "City of Good Neighbors" spirit to her new home at Asbury Pointe in Getzville, NY where she made new friends and renewed many old acquaintances as she eagerly joined in a busy schedule of activities at Asbury Pointe and around Western New York. Jean spent 50+ years at Point Abino on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie gathering family and friends at her summer home in a bird sanctuary, playing tennis, finding and pressing wild flowers, and enjoying starry night skies with her grandchildren. A solid doubles tennis player, Jean never missed a major tournament, including the hard-fought, annual match between her two sons at the Buffalo Canoe Club. She was equally passionate about her bridge game playing 2 and 3 times a week until just days before her death. Jean was always ready for a good piece of chocolate, any new card game, or a spirited political discussion. She was a life-long learner - always eager to explore the newest ideas and ready to go anywhere. Of late, she communicated with her children and grandchildren via email under the screen name "Spiffdog." Jean was a devoted wife. She married Edward J. Burke in 1944 and, some years after his death, she married Lewis E. Fancourt in 1985. Jean is survived by: her seven children, Raymond Burke (Debbie), EJ Burke (Martha), Sally Schwartzbach (Neil), Sheila Crummey (Jim), Barbara Burke, M'Evie Lyng, and Jean Burke (Aline); her sixteen grandchildren, Kate, Sara, Sean, Mike and Molly Lyng, Edward, Clare and Rachel Crummey, Ben Schwartzbach, Caitlin, Maggie and Kylee Burke, and Raymond, Callie and Carrie Burke, and the late Kristin Jean Lyng. She will be greatly missed. The family will be present on Sunday from 1-4 & 7-9pm at (Delaware Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME INC. 1132 Delaware Ave. (near W. Ferry St.) Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated from Blessed Sacrament Church, Buffalo Monday at 11:00am. Friends invited.
